Thousands visited the Township of Nelson Bay and enjoyed entertainment and family fun at the inaugural Festival of the Sea this week. The crowds were wooed by dynamic entertainers including local favourites Mick Jones and Claudio Meyer as well as performances from Robyn Yvette Dance Studio and local groups the Blue Water Line Dancers with St Michaels School, Seaside Singers and the Port Stephens Community Band.

“Volunteers and community groups made this festival happen, without the static displays and the opportunity for families to enjoy great entertainment, teamed with plenty of free activities made it a success. The festival was highly interactive and it provided groups like Marine Rescue an opportunity to showcase what they do and recruit more help. Over 2000 people toured the Daniel Thain Rescue Vessel and it is opportunities like this that brings visitors to the town. As with any activity of this scale funding is an issue and without the sponsor businesses and support from Council we are unable to deliver. We will need to seek additional business and Council sponsorship to make this event with all the great free fun sustainable” said Marian Sampson Town Coordinator.

There was a great deal of hype and humour centred around the Great Holberts Oyster Shuck Off, however the winner Simon Glen with a time of one minute 20 seconds is a serious contender for further competitions.

The festival offered great opportunities for people to win prizes and the highlight of these prizes was of course the opportunity to enjoy whale watching cruises aboard Moonshadow, Spirit and Imagine Cruises. The whales are still coming down the coast and at present most cruises are seeing pods, and there are plenty of young calves being spotted as they make their way south.
