Ballabourneen Wines

Ballabourneen (pronounced Balla-bour-neen) is a Gaelic name that refers to a town road, as close as we can work out. The original Ballabourneen vineyards were on a property close by The Old North Road of convict built fame, which when subdivided, was simply called "The Ballabourneen".

The winemaker and a very important bloke
Alex Stuart, born in Sydney in 1944 of Scottish and Welsh stock, and Daniel Binet, born in Vanuatu in 1979 of French parents, have taken very different paths to get to the same place — wine guru Len Evan’s former Hunter Valley property, now known as Ballabourneen.

Briar Ridge Vineyard

Briar Ridge has had a long history in the Hunter Valley.  The vineyards were planted in 1974 as the Squire vineyard in the ideally located Mount View Region of the Hunter Valley, NSW.  Murray Robson soon took over the vineyard until 1988 when the Davis family assumed ownership.  John Davis, geologist turned vigneron, recognising the potential of the site, set about to establish Briar Ridge as a leading producer of Hunter Valle iconic wines.

To date, Briar Ridge Vineyard boasts a staggering 23 Trophy-winning wines, along with 44 Australian and International Gold medals and countless Silver and Bronze medals.   In addition we have been rated 5 stars by James Halliday for 3 years running.

The philosophy of our wines is simple; “Produce leading world class wines from premium estate  vineyards.  Our fruit quality is enhanced through careful vineyard management including control of fruit yield.”

Kevin Sobel Wines

Carl August Sobels, migrated to South Australia with his family in 1847, after learning the art of wine-making in both Champagne and Germany. He is named in the annals of the "Barossa Valley's History", as being the pioneer wine-maker, who assisted and taught those who had already planted some vines,in the art of viniculture. In 1850,he built his own winery. His son, also named Carl, did his study in Germany, then returned to help his father before he transferred to a winery, at Watervale, in the Clare Valley, in 1869. He eventually bought the winery, which stayed in the Sobels family for 110 years, trading under the well respected "Quelltaler Wines" label.

Like his ancestors, Kevin Sobels, along with his wife Margaret and son Jason, share the same love and dedication of the industry, operating their Hunter Valley winery, which proudly bears their family name. Their winery continues an unbroken, Australian wine making tradition, now over 150 years old. Jason is a sixth generation winemaker. The pursuit of high quality and distinctive, individual styles of wine, is the same today, as it was in 1850.
